The Vent

A good friend, from a school in Brooklyn, is totally fed up with the crap she sees going on.  She sent me a long e-mail, venting her frustrations.  I can't post most of it, but I decided to share her last few lines.  These say it all:
WE ARE TURNING OUT ILLITERATE KIDS......KIDS THAT DON'T UNDERSTAND RULES AND REGULATIONS.....KIDS THAT THINK THE WORLD WILL JUST "DO IT FOR THEM"....
I am disgusted and really upset with the DOE...when did this all happen to education?  What the fuck is going on???  It is not just our school, it is all over the city!!   We are just making Bloomberg's graduation numbers go up and throwing away the kids!!!

Thanks for letting me vent!

It's not just in your schools and your city, though I doubt there should be much comfort in the fact that this is happening all over the country...

Yes! Yes! Yes!

We are also turning out a generation of kids who thanks to, "test taking skills" know how to read well enough to pass a standardized test but have no idea how to truly understand or appreciate literature, let alone read for pleasure.

Thanks NCLB!

EVERY CHILD is left behind if they are a public school student, especially in the cities of Los Angeles, New York City, Washington, DC, or Chicago.

At a night program I work at in the city students are given "credit recovery" work on a computer for classes they received a grade of 50 or 55 in. They only have to appear once in the semester to be able to apply for these classes. The hush around the students is, it is better not to go to classes and do these classes online. BTW they need to get 20 out of 60 questions correct to pass! Something is wrong with this picture!
